Happy Holidays everyone, and thank you for reading! I’m taking a bit of a hiatus from posting for the holiday, but will be back to my usual schedule next weekend. Some tentative plans for where this blog will be headed in the coming year (subject to change, of course):
I’ll be continuing to look at the use of generative AI for deceptive purposes, particularly as relates to the 2024 U.S. election season. It is my expectation that misleading uses of this technology both on social and traditional media will continue to become more prevalent for the foreseeable future.
Speaking of traditional media, coverage of misinformation-related topics has sometimes been messy and is unfortunately likely to get worse, due to certain tech industry trends. Thus, I plan to devote the occasional post to dissecting and debunking misleading coverage of misinformation in mainstream publications.
I will be spending less time consolidating older threads from X/Twitter into articles, as there’s simply too much current material to look at. (There are still a few stories from 2017-2020 that deserve telling in slightly more detail, so I will likely make exceptions here and there.)
On that note, I expect to write less about X/Twitter overall and more about other platforms. Many people have starting growing their presences on alternatives such as Bluesky, Mastodon, Spoutible, and Threads over the past year, and attempts to manipulate those platforms aren’t far behind.
If you have any thoughts for topics you’d like to see covered here, feel free to leave a comment. Again, happy holidays and hope that all of you have an excellent 2024!
